How to control the gap between truss clamps and trusses?
The gap control between truss clamps and trusses is the key to ensure the strength of the connection. It requires intervention in the entire process from design selection, processing accuracy to installation technology. Specifically, the gap can be precisely controlled through the three-step method of "three-dimensional tolerance matching - surface treatment optimization - dynamic compensation adjustment". The key points of operation are as follows:
1. Selection and design based on tolerance chain
Preset matching tolerance: select the inner diameter of the U-shaped groove of the fixture according to the cross-sectional dimensions of the truss chord (such as 40mm×40mm square tube), and design it according to the H7/g6 clearance matching standard (such as theoretical clearance 0.1-0.3mm). A laser cutting fixture is used for an industrial truss to control the groove width tolerance to ±0.1mm, and the measured gap average is 0.22mm, which is 60% lower than the error of traditional stamping fixtures.
Calibration of arc surface fit: For arc trusses, 3D scanning is used to obtain the chord surface data, and a CNC bending fixture is customized (bending accuracy ±0.5°). This method was used in a dome project to increase the fit area between the arc fixture and the chord from 65% to 92%, and reduce the area with a gap of >0.5mm by 85%.
2. Precision control of processing and surface treatment
High-precision molding process: Steel fixtures are processed by wire cutting U-shaped grooves (roughness Ra≤3.2μm), and aluminum alloy fixtures are processed by CNC milling (tolerance ±0.05mm). After milling, the matching clearance between a stage truss fixture and the 6061-T6 aluminum truss is stable at 0.15-0.2mm, which is 3 times more accurate than the die-casting process.
Surface treatment compensation: If the truss surface is sprayed with an anti-corrosion coating (such as a zinc-nickel alloy coating with a thickness of 8-12μm), the fixture groove surface needs to reserve a coating thickness tolerance. An outdoor truss project increased the fixture groove width by 0.02mm to avoid a gap that was too small due to the thickening of the coating (the original design gap was 0.2mm, and the actual control was 0.22-0.24mm), preventing it from getting stuck or loosening.
3. Dynamic clearance adjustment during installation

Plug detection and shim compensation: Use a feeler gauge to measure the gap during installation (standard value 0.1-0.3mm). If it exceeds 0.5mm, install a stainless steel shim (thickness 0.1-0.5mm graded) between the fixture and the truss. The truss of a certain exhibition was compensated with 0.3mm shims, so that the gaps of 20 sets of out-of-tolerance fixtures all returned to the standard range.
Adaptive adjustment of elastic elements: add disc springs (such as 12mm diameter and 2.5mm free height) to the bolted joints of the clamps, and fill the tiny gaps (0.1-0.2mm) through elastic deformation after tightening. A performance truss adopts this design, and the gap change is less than 0.05mm after 200 times of disassembly and assembly, which is 4 times more durable than traditional bolted connections.
4. Typical cases and acceptance criteria
A stadium truss project uses "CNC machining fixture + 0.2mm standard plug detection", requiring:
More than 90% of the area gap is ≤0.3mm;
The area where the cumulative gap of a single fixture is greater than 0.5mm is less than 5%.
According to the standard, the displacement of the fixture node of the truss under the wind load of 50 years is ≤0.8mm, which is 37% less than the deformation of similar projects with excessive gaps. This method is suitable for scenes such as building trusses and stage load-bearing frames with high rigidity requirements, and can effectively avoid vibration loosening caused by excessive gaps or stress concentration caused by too small gaps.
